Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal pain is one of the most common problems physiotherapists treat, and encompasses any injury, ache or pain of the ‘muscular’ or ‘skeletal’ system. Whether you’ve hurt your back, suffer from headaches, have a stiff shoulder, or a niggling knee, we cover it all. From head to toe and everything in between.
We also know that injuries rarely exist on their own so it is essential to look at the body holistically. Hence musculoskeletal, sports, and pelvic physiotherapy often overlap.
At Motion Physiotherapy we use a combination of hands on therapy, needling techniques, exercise prescription, re-education of dynamic movement patterns, and most of all education, to free you from your pain for good.
Sports
At Motion Physiotherapy we know how important it is for you to be performing at your best. Whether you’re a weekend warrior, elite athlete or casual exerciser we’ve got you covered. Our aim is to not only treat your injury, but to also focus on injury prevention and reducing reoccurrence. Looking after you not only during the sporting season but also in the pre and post season so you can do what you love without pain stopping you!

Daytime bladder incontinence
Bed Wetting
Urgency, frequency and overactive bladder syndrome
Constipation and difficulty emptying
Bowel leakage/soiling
Dry Needling
Dry needling is a common technique used to treat tight muscles and reduce pain. It differs from the traditional Chinese method of acupuncture set out in ancient times, in that its concept is based on modern neurophysiology and anatomy.
Musculoskeletal pain is often associated with painful ‘trigger points’ (knots) in the muscle. They may be spontaneously painful or painful only when pressed, and are often associated with a shortening of the muscle. What’s more these trigger points may also refer pain to other areas of the body.
Neuromuscular dry needling involves fine, single use only needles, which are inserted into or around trigger points of a muscle. This helps to desensitise the trigger point, thus resetting the muscle tension, improving muscle length and recruitment, and most of all decreasing pain.
Dry needling is often less painful than manual therapy. During treatment you may feel a dull, heavy sensation in the muscle. Often you will feel the muscle ‘twitch’ which may correspond with your pain. Effects can be immediate or within 3 days after treatment. Added benefits such as improved sleep and relaxation can also be experienced. It can be a very effective treatment to use in conjunction with other Physiotherapy treatments mentioned above.
Pilates
Pilates is a full body conditioning program that focuses on controlled movement, emphasising breathing awareness and correct body alignment. It is a form of low impact exercise and easily adaptable for specific injuries or for injury prevention.
Classes centre on strengthening the pelvic floor and the deep abdominal muscles and is a fantastic form of exercise to rehabilitate from injury, particularly spinal or postural pain. It is suitable for people of all ages, genders and activity levels, and is great for new mums wanting guidance on how to get back into exercise after having a baby.
Benefits include:
Increased overall tone, strength and endurance
Improved body and posture awareness
Improved flexibility
Flatter and firmer abdominal muscles
Increased energy levels, improved mood and concentration
Relaxation and improved breathing efficiency
Here at Motion Physiotherapy, we run mat-based exercise classes, adding in the use of the stability ball, resistance bands or circle to further enhance your workout. Classes generally run for 45-minute duration including a warm up and cool down period. Because our classes are run by a Physiotherapist you have peace of mind that your exercise session is under the guidance of a health professional who has full knowledge of injury rehabilitation and prevention.
